Ports of Genoa – Tackeling the future

Tackling the future – The Italian shipping hubs in the time of geopolitical tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean

The situation of commercial shipping in and via the Mediterranean Sea remains difficult. The attacks on ships around the southern Red Sea region, Gulf of Aden, and the Arabian Sea continue, while the regional conflicts have spilt over to the Persian Gulf and its approaches. Especially the Italian ports are affected by the detours of container ships going around the Cape of Good Hope, while the significantly longer passage is having its impact on the markets.

In order to get further insights, we are happy to welcoming the Ports of Genoa in Basel on 27 March 2025.

Members of the Port Authority and the Port community of Genoa will explain to our Club members how the current situation is felt in Italy’s ports, which measures are taken in order to improve the trade flows, also to and from Switzerland – and why Genoa has surprisingly well mananged the challenges over the last two years.

The Ports of Genoa are the 6th container port in Europe in terms of volume, the 1st Italian container gateway port with 2.74 million TEU handled in 2023 and a leading hub for 80% of the maufacturing companies in Northern italy.

Besides, the fastest way from Switzerland to the sea in a geographic sense goes via Genoa.

We look forward to this evening of mutual Swiss-Italian exchange.
